Why only three
Eight digits in unbroken ascending sequence with no wrap means the first digit has to leave room for seven more, so it can only be 0, 1 or 2. That gives 01234567, 12345678 and 23456789 — and nothing else. Descending works the same way from the other end: 98765432, 87654321, 76543210.
Six true ladders per run, against 9 solids. The hobby tends to treat the solid as the ultimate fancy serial, and by the arithmetic that is the wrong way round — though a solid is more immediately striking to look at, which is why the market does not always agree with the counting.

There are 7 of those in each direction rather than 3, so they are more than twice as common as true ladders and considerably cheaper. That is not a criticism: a run-through ladder is a genuine fancy serial with a recognised name and a real market.
What does not have a market is a "broken ladder" — a serial with most of its digits in sequence and one out of place. No agreed definition exists, which means no reliable buyer does either.
